Sai Sin / Phusa Yong
Sai sin (sacred ceremonial thread) is a white, unbleached cotton thread braided into a long cord and folded together to make it strong (commonly folded into 3 or 9 strands). It is used in religious and auspicious ceremonies as a symbol of sanctity, protection, and good fortune. It is believed to be empowered by the monks’ chanting, and thus able to ward off danger and malevolent spirits and to help cultivate goodness.
Phusa yong (funeral connecting cloth) is a strip of cloth used in funeral rites, stretched from the mouth of the urn (kot) or the coffin to the monks, so that the monks can perform rites such as bangsukun (the cloth-offering/merit-transfer rite) or sadap pakon (funeral chanting/recitation) in place of using sai sin. It is regarded as sacred, and it is forbidden to step over it or tread on it. The material used varies according to the status of the deceased—for example, ordinary people typically use yellow cloth, while royalty may use silver cloth or a white striped cloth (traditionally specified). For high-ranking royalty, an additional underlay cloth (pha rong yong, a white cloth) must also be spread beneath it as another layer.
